On Thursday, August 8, 2024, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 hit Japan, leading to widespread panic and destruction. Japan's Meteorological Agency, JMA, issued a warning, citing the looming threat of a Megathrust earthquake in Japan.

About the Earthquake

Time: 12:45 PM WIB The epicenter was located directly under the island of Honshu, off the coast of Nagasaki. Depth: 30 km Magnitude: 7.5 Intensity: 89 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale

Impact

The earthquake caused significant damage, including building collapses, landslides, and power outages. Emergency services have been mobilized to address the disaster. The Japanese government dispatched rescue teams to the affected areas and urged residents to remain calm.

Evacuation Order

A mandatory evacuation order was issued for the surrounding area, with residents advised to move to higher ground or seek emergency shelter. The Japanese military deployed troops to aid in the evacuation efforts.

Megathrust earthquake

The threat of a Megathrust earthquake has become a major concern for Japan, given its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire. The country's geographical position renders it susceptible to major earthquakes and tsunamis.
